The documentary, photographic and multimedia exhibition I due versi del viaggio

Italia-Africa australe, viaggi di esplorazione e di migrazione

was born from the homonymous project financed by Otto per Mille (pre-tax donation) of the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches, realized by the Italian Geographic Society Onlus (SGI) in partnership with the Waldensian Cultural Centre Foundation (FCCV) and in collaboration with the “Luigi Pigorini” museum.

In the exhibition, which includes ethnographic collections, documents and photographs, the journey made in the late nineteenth century by two Waldensian missionaries in southern Africa is intertwined with ethno-anthropological interest in indigenous peoples and the role of geography practiced in those years as an ingredient of politics.

From the experience of the missionaries of the past, in southern Africa also as geographers and ethnologists, we will look at the motivations that animate the missionary action of today; from the reflection on Italian emigration at the end of the nineteenth century in southern Africa we will move on to the testimonies of migrants who today, for various reasons, from Africa reach Italy.

The journey of knowledge and discovery of a bygone era relates to today’s departures of migrants in search of new opportunities, refuge, resources, a new beginning.

Journeys, performances, stories and objects of yesterday. Missionaries, geographers, ethnologists, migrants today.

The exhibition will be open until November 4, 2018
