leftovers, clues of something THAT happened, that is happening or that will happen

GARBAGE

The presence of garbage bags in the street is the norm in Brussels: it is a mark in the landscape, a (bad) city peculiarity. This situation is worse in particular cases, such as when there is a building site.

There is always, in every time of the day, some mixed trash around the trash bin

There is a little hill of garbage in a corner of the street, outside the trash bin.

There is a hill of garbage in a corner of the square.

There is also an abandoned street sign, since months.

There is a tree around which people leave the garbage bags and also some street signs.

There is a flowerbed that became a garbage bed

Garbage makes barriers all around the square

A street sign is the point where people leave a lot of trash

The path around the square starts and ends in front of a garbage hill

LEFTOVERS

Some leftovers are able to tell stories

There is a group of pink trash bags around a street sign.

These are special bags: it means that there are many commercial activities all around.

Someone lost a Polaroid photo on the grass: there is a writing on it that says "happy birthday".

Five red cans of beer lie at the base of John Cockerill's statue

Leftovers of the afterwork that are here all the week without being cleaned: a carpet of cigarettes, lighters, bottle caps...

A plastic fork lies near a bench after lunch

The park is open, and it wasn't suppose to be like this according to the timetable. The quantity of trash around the bin proves that many people spent the evening here.

A wine glass lies abandoned near a bench

There are pigeons interested in something on the floor: it seems vomit, a souvenir from Saturday night

There are some empty bottles of wine at the base of the statue (and the glass bin is distant only some meters)

There is a small pile of leaves and muddy stuff on the grass: today someone cleaned up the lake.

VISIBILITY AND SECURITY

Do we feel safer if we are able to see that we are controlled or does it make us uncomfortable?

All the area of the European Parliament is hyper-controlled and you can clearly see this.

In the square of the European Parliament you can see more than 20 CCTV cameras looking at you

Soldiers doing rounds in the area, in couple

An army tank is parked behind the House of the European History, obstructing a path towards the Parliament

A group of people of private security of various kind meets up in the middle of the square to talk

When is dark in the park, you can only see one thing: the reflective sign of the video surveillance .

A CCTV camera looks at a corner where normally some homeless men do their physical needs; the only public toilet of the area closes at 19.

CLUES

There are signs that give us clues about where we are or what is near us.

There is a sticker of the Visitors of the European Parliament on a wall of the square: I know where I am

A group of Scouts, in front of the House of the European History, carries the super-visible blue bags of the EPP (European People's Party)

Lot of people dressed in a blue suit and tie eat at the blue fishbar during the lunch break

There is a high noise of glasses being thrown away; in the square indeed there are some glass bins.

12:02 MONDAY 02 07 18 / place du luxembourg / CLEANING

From the park you can see, among the trees, the higher part of the European Parliament building

WAITING OBJECTS

Some objects are just "waiting for their moment to come". Their presence talks about an absence: of a body, of an other object, of a condition etc..

Some cardboards hidden in the public space wait for the next time they will be used to beg money in the street.

A cardboard on the pavement, with a bag and a glass in front of it, indicates the space of a person who begs for money, also when the person is not present.

There is a super-small canal in the park, waiting for the water to come

A sort of boiler and a blanket are beneath a tree: this is the space where a person inhabits.

There is a cardboard and a paper bag in the pavement of the square, in a small corner. This will be a bed tonight.

There is an abandoned trolley in the middle of the square, during an important event: what is going to happen? Nothing. The owner was taking a photo some meters away.

There are piled bins on the pavement of the square, waiting for the afterwork.

A beautiful dog is waiting his owner out of the market

UP

I found a book in the square floor, beneath the light of the plaque "Esplanade Solidarność". All the pages are filled with Polish handwriting in blue ink, written over top of the printed text.
